ABOUT THE ROLE

Captain is responsible for managing vessels, vessel personnel, and all barges in tow. The Captain ensures crew members' safety and well‑being while on the vessel, and must adhere to all United States Coast Guard regulations and company policies.

WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH

  • Navigate the vessel safely and ensure safety rules are followed by all.
  • Manage daily vessel efficiency, maintenance, and upkeep.
  • Direct and coordinate barge and towing operations, ensuring adherence to safety, environmental, and industry regulations.
  • Supervise the safe and efficient operation of the crew, vessel, and tow, keeping equipment neat and in good working order.
  • Ensure company policies and protocols are followed; report violations of policies or maritime regulations to the Marine Operations Manager.
  • Maintain routine maintenance and operation of all machinery aboard the vessel or tow.
  • Manage crews, report anticipated crew shortages, direct crew in daily operations, and provide training.
  • Set the watch standing schedule for the crew, ensuring no licensed wheelman works more than 12 hours in any 24‑hour period.
  • Report boat position, cargo barges, exchange times, estimated arrival/departure times, delays, and fuel status.
  • Maintain the Vessel Daily Log and ensure it is updated at the end of each 6‑hour watch by the crew or their relief.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving, and adhering to health, safety, and environmental policies; promote a culture of safety.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Education: High school diploma or equivalent

Required Work Experience: 5–10 years of operating towing vessels and moving barges in the working area, plus 2 years supervising a tow boat crew

Required Training/Certifications

Captains must hold a Master of Towing/Mate of Towing Vessels or Master of 200 gross tons or more with towing vessels endorsement license issued by the United States Coast Guard, and a radar observer endorsement.

Travel Requirements

Must be able to work 15 days on, 7 days off; stand watch for 12 hours each day, divided into six‑hour shifts.

Additional Requirements

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of local waterways and regulations.
  • Experience with electronic navigation systems and associated technology.
  • Ability to live in close quarters.
  • Understanding of vessel maintenance, cargo handling equipment, and operational procedures.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in changing conditions.
  • Required to walk on irregular surfaces, including muddy and low‑light conditions, and to walk up and down several flights of stairs multiple times per day.
  • Required to sit or stand for up to six hours while on watch and operating the vessel.
  • Ability to lift, pull, push, and carry at least 50 lbs.
  • All licensed Captains must take and pass a physical exam every five years to renew their license, per US Coast Guard requirements.
  • Adherence to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), including respirators. Certified respirator users must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face to pass fit tests.
