Dock Operator

The role of the dock operator involves serving as the person-in-charge of the dock and providing assistance to shoreside tankermen in the safe transfer of oil products and chemicals to and from barges and/or ships. As the person-in-charge of the dock, the operator plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of operations, contributing to the organization's overall success.

Essential Job Functions

  • Engaging with the person-in-charge of the vessel and communicating effectively with facility personnel to facilitate smooth operations.
  • Keeping detailed dock logs to accurately record all events in chronological order, ensuring comprehensive documentation of activities.
  • Proficiently operating various equipment, including cranes, hydraulic systems, electrical machinery, mechanical devices, and manual/motor-operated valves.
  • Familiarizing oneself with the layout of the facility's piping system to ensure accurate transfer of the appropriate product.
  • Gauging the barge and retrieving samples of the product from the vessel to verify quantities and quality.
  • Performing any other assigned duties necessary to fulfill job requirements and contribute to the successful completion of tasks.
  • Operate cranes and other dock equipment to load and unload cargo from vessels.
  • Monitor cargo handling equipment to ensure proper functioning and maintenance.
  • Inspect and secure cargo for safe transport, following security and safety procedures.
  • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of dock facilities and equipment.
  • Assist vessels as needed, including guiding them to and from berths.
  • Completes any other duties that may be assigned to complete the job.

Qualifications, Education, and Experience

  • Experience is a plus but not required, and paid on-the-job training is available
  • May require a valid Driver's License and/or a valid TWIC card, depending on work location
  • 18 years or older and legally able to work in the U.S.
  • Pass a drug screen, physical, and background check
  • Previous military experience and proven ability to follow procedures is a plus.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organizations HRIS and talent management systems.
  • Rigorous attention to detail.
  • Willingness to go above and beyond to assist co-workers and customers.

Work Schedule and Compensation

  • Starting pay $20.00 per hour with possibility for advancement
  • 24-hour on call variable schedule
  • Travel locally to different chemical plants and refineries
